What is Endoscopic Axillary Breast Augmentation (Mammoplasty)?
Endoscopic Axillary Breast Augmentation Mammoplasty (EABA) is an advanced surgical technique for breast enlargement that uses a small incision hidden in the natural crease of the armpit. Unlike traditional methods that involve incisions under the breast or around the nipple, EABA utilises an endoscope, which is a tiny camera attached to a slender instrument, allowing the surgeon to perform the procedure with enhanced precision and no scarring on the breast itself. Dr Layt has extensive experience with this technique and with changes in implant technologies and techniques is excited to be reintroducing this into the options for appropriate patients.
This method allows implants to be placed with greater accuracy, either above or below the chest muscle, and reduces disruption to breast tissue. It is particularly suitable for women seeking an alternative approach to traditional breast surgery, who may be suitable to the use of this technique. Dr Craig Layt at The Layt Clinic provides this surgical approach to suitable patients who desire this form of augmentation mammoplasty, creating bespoke, patient-focused treatment plans.
Reasons for Endoscopic Axillary Breast Augmentation Mammoplasty
Although patient motivations may differ, the following are some common reasons for seeking this type of augmentation mammoplasty. You may seek the procedure if you:
- Have concerns about visible scars on the breast: The incision is located in the armpit, eliminating the need for scarring on the breast itself.
- A desire for surgical precision: The endoscope allows direct visualisation of the surgical area, enhancing surgical accuracy.
- Want to minimise tissue trauma: Less invasive access leads to less disruption of breast tissue, potentially reducing postoperative pain and bruising.
- Recovery time: Many patients experience a shorter recovery compared to traditional methods (although a recovery period is still necessary).
- Desire preservation of breast function: Because there is less interference with the breast gland and ducts, this technique may help preserve breastfeeding ability and nipple sensation.
Although the procedure may have a reduced risk of tissue trauma, breast function issues, and scarring, please note that all surgeries come with risks. This method does not eliminate risks but may be preferable to certain patients after weighing the risks and benefits of different surgical methods. Our team can help you weigh your options at your consultation.
Contraindications
While EABA is a suitable procedure for many, it may not be the right choice for everyone. Contraindications include:
- Excessively loose or ptotic (sagging) breasts: These cases may require a different technique or additional procedures, such as a breast lift (mastopexy).
- Previous axillary surgery or scarring: Past trauma or surgery in the armpit area may complicate the approach.
- Very muscular or athletic patients: In highly muscular patients, submuscular placement via this route may be more challenging.
- Certain health conditions: Patients with uncontrolled diabetes, clotting disorders, or compromised immune systems may not be candidates for surgery.
- Unrealistic expectations or body dysmorphia: Psychological readiness and appropriate expectations are essential for a successful outcome.
Your consultation at The Layt Clinic
We will discuss your suitability for surgery during your private, supportive consultation with our team. During your appointment, we will prioritise your needs and preferences, guiding you to a suitable treatment plan that satisfies your goals. We may ask you questions about your medical history to determine if your desired EABA surgery is right for you.
If you are a good candidate for the procedure, we can proceed to discuss your options about breast implants. Breast implants come in different shapes and sizes. The appropriate size implant will depend on your aesthetic vision, natural body frame, breast size, and other details. If you have further questions about implant options, we can address these in your appointment.
Aftercare and Recovery
Your surgery will be performed according to the details discussed during your consultation, and recovery begins after surgery is complete. After being cleared to leave the hospital, you will need to have somebody accompany you home, as you will not be able to drive. At-home aftercare is a vital part of recovery, and therefore, your surgeon at The Layt Clinic will send you home with instructions on how to care for your healing breasts.
You may be advised to maintain good hydration and a healthy diet. While getting rest is necessary, you may also be encouraged to get up and walk as soon as you feel able to. Gentle physical activity (such as walking around the house) can help encourage blood flow and reduce risks. Additionally, ensure that you avoid smoking, alcohol, and strenuous physical activity for the duration of your recovery.
Potential Complications
As with any surgical procedure, EABA carries risks. While uncommon, complications may include:
- Bleeding or haematoma: Accumulation of blood in the surgical area.
- Infection: Though rare, infections may require antibiotics or surgical intervention.
- Implant malposition or asymmetry: Despite careful placement, minor irregularities may occur.
- Capsular contracture: A condition where scar tissue tightens around the implant, causing firmness or distortion.
- Changes in sensation: Temporary or permanent numbness or sensitivity changes in the nipple, breast or axilla.
- Arm movement limitation or nerve irritation: Due to the incision location, some patients may temporarily experience discomfort with arm elevation.
- Need for revision surgery: Occasionally, further procedures are required to achieve or maintain desired results.
