Dr Paul Cheng is a New Zealand trained Specialist Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeon, currently based in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia.
Dr Cheng provides specialist service in the private sector at the Layt Clinic. He enjoys all aspects of plastic & reconstructive surgery, including skin cancer surgery / aesthetic facial surgery / breast & body contouring surgery / burn & trauma reconstruction / microsurgery / hand surgery, etc. He is passionate in delivering the highest standard of care to his patients. Dr Cheng holds a current AHPRA specialist registration in Plastic Surgery (MED0002720769) in Australia, and a MCNZ vocational registration in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, in New Zealand. He is a current member of Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) and New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons (NZAPS).
Dr Paul Cheng: Education and Training
Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Dr Cheng moved to New Zealand at a young age. He grew up in Auckland, and graduated from Macleans College with the ASB Scholarship and the Katherine Mansfield Trophy for the top scholar. He then obtained his primary medical degree from the University of Auckland, graduated with the Senior Prize in Medicine. After qualifying as a doctor in November 2008, Dr Cheng had worked in a variety of surgical specialties. He also had obtained further qualification of Post-Graduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy from the University of Otago, graduated with the Distinction Award.
Dr Cheng went on to complete his specialist training in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, at various training units throughout New Zealand (Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton). He had been awarded the Fellowship (FRACS) from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2022. He had numerous publication in renowned medical journals, and he had been regularly involved in surgical education of junior colleagues – including being a RACS examiner for Part I Clinical Examinations since October 2023.
Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is about principles and techniques. FRACS-qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeons are able to apply their skills to improve tissues and age-related changes in a way that no other surgeon is trained. Dr Cheng is passionate and dedicated to be trained as a Specialist Plastic Surgeon and offers this specialist skills to his patients.
Dr Paul Cheng has previously worked as a Specialist Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon at Waikato Hospital (Hamilton NZ) in 2023. As of August 2023, he has undertaken a career break from New Zealand, to pursue further post-fellowship training from various internationally renowned experts in Australia (Facial aesthetic surgery at Sydney & Breast aesthetic surgery at Gold Coast). He has also briefly worked as a locum VMO Specialist Plastic Surgeon at Wollongong Hospital (NSW Australia) in early 2024. Dr Cheng has enjoyed his recently completed ASAPS fellowship with Dr Craig Layt so much, that he has decided to stay in the Gold Coast with his young family.
