Gold Coast Plastic Surgeon Answers Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Implant Safety and Breast Augmentation

Gold Coast plastic surgeon Craig Layt, MBBS, FRACS answers frequently asked questions about breast implant safety and breast augmentation.

Dr Craig Layt with The Layt Clinic answers common questions about breast augmentation and the safety of breast implants.

Gold Coast, QLD – Thousands of individuals in Australia undergo plastic surgery each year, and a large number of the procedures performed involve breast augmentation. At The Layt Clinic, Gold Coast plastic surgeon Craig Layt, MBBS, FRACS says breast augmentation has remained one of the most popular treatments at his practice for many years, and with the many advances in breast enhancement surgery that have come along over the last few decades, the procedure has helped numerous patients achieve their goals with very natural-looking results. With that in mind, Dr Layt says it is very important for women who are interested in procedures designed to enlarge and enhance the shape of their breasts to have a full and complete picture of what is involved with breast augmentation and the recovery process, as well as answers to questions about the safety of breast implants and other aspects of the treatment.

Dr Layt notes that recent news about a very rare cancer known as Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), which has been potentially linked to very specific types of breast implants, has understandably prompted many women to inquire about how safe breast implants really are. Dr Layt says BIA-ALCL is an immune system cancer that appears to be mainly associated with certain types of textured-surface breast implant models. While the news about BIA-ALCL was justifiably concerning for women who have breast implants and those considering breast augmentation, Dr Layt explains that the condition is extremely rare and the number of cases around the world is very low. He also notes that, in his own plastic surgery practice, he closely adheres to guidelines designed to minimise risks associated with breast implants. That said, Dr Layt stresses that any individual who has concerns about their breast implants, or are experiencing any kind of symptoms, should contact their doctor. Dr Layt also emphasizes the importance of regular self-breast examinations and routine professional screenings, as well. He says patients who have concerns should feel confident that their plastic surgeon has their best wishes at heart and will talk with them about breast implant removal options if that is what is desired or necessary.

According to Dr Layt, one of the most common questions he receives about breast augmentation involves general candidacy requirements for the procedure. He says a number of patients who are considering the placement of breast implants wonder whether they have “aged out” of contention for breast augmentation. Fortunately, Dr Layt says, age is simply not a very important factor for most patients when it comes to determining their candidacy. He explains that the top criteria he is most concerned with are the patient’s current state of overall health, their medical history, and whether those components increase the risks involved with a surgical procedure. He says that women who are medically cleared for surgery and who have realistic expectations for the results of breast augmentation are often very good candidates for the procedure, noting that he has helped many women in upper age ranges achieve beautiful aesthetic outcomes.

During the initial consultation with each patient, Dr Layt talks with them about their concerns and goals, performs an examination, and explains the procedure in detail. When the patient ultimately chooses to undergo the breast augmentation procedure, they are presented with a range of breast implant sizes, shapes, and types to choose from. A customised treatment plan is then created, and Dr Layt discusses what can be expected during the procedure and throughout the recovery process. He says breast augmentation is typically performed as a day surgery under general anaesthesia, allowing patients to avoid an overnight hospital stay. Dr Layt notes that women who are considering the procedure should understand that a rest and recovery period will be necessary after breast augmentation. In many cases, patients are able to resume some of their normal daily activities after about one week; however, Dr Layt reveals that each patient’s needs are a bit different, and post-operative guidelines will be recommended based on what is best for the individual. In terms of the final result, Dr Layt notes that his breast augmentation procedures are uniquely crafted for each patient to produce outcomes that achieve individual expectations while looking natural, and he utilises suturing techniques designed to make residual scarring as inconspicuous as possible.

Dr Layt says an important thing to remember for women who have breast implants or are considering a breast augmentation procedure is that they should always feel comfortable asking any questions they may have. He says it is also imperative that women be sure to talk with an experienced and highly qualified plastic surgeon about their desires and concerns, and that they feel their doctor is genuinely listening to them and providing them with an honest and detailed assessment.
